Mean Median Mode Guide: Basic Statistics Examples

Mean, median, and mode are three different ways to summarize a data set. They often answer different questions, so it is important to know what each one measures.

Mean

The mean is the arithmetic average. Add all values, then divide by the number of values.

Median

The median is the middle value after sorting. If there are two middle values, average those two values.

Mode

The mode is the value that appears most often. Some data sets have no mode, and some have more than one mode.

Example

For 84, 90, 90, 72, 88, 95, 90, the mode is 90. The mean is the total divided by 7, and the median is the middle value after sorting.
